A Letter To My Husband On Our One-Year Marriage Anniversary

Dear Hubby,

I’m listening to “Take Me Home” by Phil Collins. Do you remember in Tennessee when I played that song and you told me you’d turn it on as we were leaving our first apartment together? You teased me while I held back tears over the fact that we were leaving.

I thought my freedom was being taken away from me. The issue was I didn’t know for how long. A month? A year? Two years?

Life is filled with unpredictable circumstances and I guess moving to Tennessee was one of them. We didn’t know Tennessee would fuck us over. All we knew was we needed to take that step in order to strengthen our relationship. While most couples simply move in together in the same state, we took it to another level by moving to another.

But, we learned to lean on each other. We learned to become more independent, instead of dependent on our parents for nearly everything. Honestly, I was scared shitless, but knowing that I had your hand to hold, that I had you by my side made it 10 times better.

In my opinion, our whole relationship has been nothing, but tests and we seemed to have passed them all! Our first being getting out of our parents’ home and living on our own, learning how to budget money, the emotional stress of moving to another state and being ‘parents’ to two dogs.

And, then, a year ago, we stood in front of our family and friends and confessed our love for one another. We looked each other in the eyes, made a promise and commitment to love each other for eternity.

I wanted to say I love you.

I love you because you take care of me. I love you because you’re unselfish. I love you because you put me first. I love you because you take care of our pups. I love you because you hold my hand and kiss me on the head. I love you because you are a kind, genuine, honest, sexy, and respectful individual.

Even though I may not show it as much as I should, I appreciate you.

I appreciate everything you do. I appreciate you teaching me and guiding me through this life we’re living together.

Everyone has a moment of the day they look forward to the most. For some, it’s the first sip of wine, or when a good football game is on, or the time of day they get to sit in front of the TV.

My favorite part of the day is when I’m beside you. We don’t have to be doing anything in particular. I just look forward to being by your side.

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to be married to anyone else except for you. Though you get on my nerves sometimes, at the end of the day, you are the love of my life—always in my thoughts and in my heart.
